Chris Brown Escapes Jail Time for Beating Rihanna

Posted by Janice Bryant On June - 23 - 2009

On June 22, Chris Brown pled guilty on assault charges. The Los Angeles Times has reported that in exchange for his plea he will receive no jail time from the beating in February of former girlfriend Rihanna. The plea agreement terms were agreed to just a few hours before Brown’s hearing was scheduled to start. Brown won’t see any jail time but will be performing community labor for six months, be serving five years of probation, and enroll in a domestic violence prevention course that lasts for a year.

In addition, Judge Patricia Schnegg from the Los Angeles County Superior Court ordered the twenty year old Brown for five years to remain 50 yards away at least from Rihanna. One of Rihanna’s lawyers said she thought that order was too extreme since Brown and Rihanna attend many of the same functions in the entertainment industry. Judge Schnegg lessened the distance so that Brown had to only stay 10 yards away at public events from Rihanna.

Reportedly, Rihanna’s lawyer said she didn’t have objections to the deal after hearing about the details. Rihanna had been prepared to testify against her former boyfriend.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a district attorney office spokesperson had said it was similar agreement to other cases when this sort of felony was charged.

The plea agreement also involved dropping the charge of criminal threats against Brown.

The judge agreed that Brown would be able to fulfill his sentencein Virginia, his home state.

A district attorney office spokesperson said that Brown would probably be required to complete approximately 1400 hours of community service involving graffiti removal, trash pickup and other similar duties.
